What Actually Happens During a Lymphatic Drainage Session

If you've never had lymphatic drainage before, you probably have questions. It doesn't look like a regular massage. It doesn't feel like one either. And if you're used to deep tissue work, your first thought might be — is this even doing anything?

It is. A lot, actually.

First — what is the lymphatic system?

Your lymphatic system is a network of vessels, nodes, and fluid that runs throughout your entire body. It's responsible for removing waste, toxins, and excess fluid from your tissues. It supports your immune system, keeps inflammation in check, and helps your body recover from injury, illness, and surgery.

Unlike your cardiovascular system, your lymphatic system has no pump. It relies on muscle movement, breathing, and manual stimulation to keep things flowing. When it gets sluggish — from surgery, illness, inactivity, or chronic stress — fluid backs up. You feel it as puffiness, heaviness, fatigue, and that general sense of being off.

So what actually happens in the session?

When you come in, we start with a conversation. I want to know where you are right now — what's going on in your body, what brought you in, and what you're hoping to get out of the session. That conversation shapes everything that follows.

Then you're on the table. Lymphatic drainage uses very light, rhythmic pressure — far lighter than a traditional massage. I'm working with the skin and the superficial tissue, not the deep muscle. The movement is slow and intentional, following the pathways of your lymphatic vessels toward the nodes where the fluid can be processed and cleared.

"The pressure is light, but the effect is significant. Most clients feel a noticeable difference in how their body feels within the first session."

Depending on your goals, the session may focus on your full body or target specific areas — the abdomen, the legs, the face, or post-surgical sites. If you're coming in for Lymphomodelling®, the work becomes more precise, using techniques designed to reshape and contour by moving fluid with intention.

What does it feel like?

Most people describe it as deeply relaxing — almost meditative. The rhythm is slow and consistent. Some clients fall asleep. Others feel a gentle warmth or tingling as circulation increases in the area being worked.

After the session, you may notice you need to use the bathroom more than usual. That's normal and a good sign — your body is clearing what's been moved. You may also feel lighter, less puffy, and more energized. Some people feel a little tired afterward as their system does the work of processing.

Is it right for you?

Lymphatic drainage is beneficial for a wide range of people and situations — post-surgical recovery, chronic swelling, immune support, skin health, stress, and general wellness. It's also a core part of pre- and post-op care for clients preparing for or recovering from any type of surgery.

It is not appropriate for everyone. If you have active infection, certain heart conditions, or untreated cancer, we'll talk through whether this is the right service for you before we begin.

The best way to know if it's right for you? Come in. Your body will tell us exactly what it needs.
